Glass artist Matt Adkins trained in glass and ceramics before working in architectural glass. He now designs and makes his own decorative glass art, employing many of the techniques used in the architectural glass industry to create truly stunning and unique pieces.
Matthew uses float glass in his work, using using powders and frits to create the colours. After working on a design, he hand carves a mould to obtain the required relief and this is pre-fired in the kiln to harden it. Each piece will be fired at temperatures of over 800 degrees centigrade for up to 20 hours at each firing. This slumps and fuses the individual pieces of glass and colours used in the design. Most pieces are fired twice to obtain the required texture and shape. If the glass needs to be formed into to a bowl, the glass can be re-fired at slightly lower temperatures to obtain that shape without altering the relief.
